Description

Theme for day 26 is a fairytale in which our character should be playing. I have two favourite fairytales between which I could not decide, so I depicted Amarza in both.

First, "The Master Thief". A funny tale of the Brothers Grimm into which Amarza fits like a snail into the salad.

A young man (here replaced by Amarza) became wealthy thanks to his thefts. When he tells his godfather, a count, about his "job", the count is not pleased. But because the Master Thief is his godchild, he says that the thief may go unpunished – if he proves that he is indeed a master of his craft. The Master Thief has to steal the best horse of the count which is guarded by three men, the wedding ring of the countess as well as her bedsheet, and eventually he is to steal the parson and the sexton from church.
The thief disguises himself as an old merchant woman, sells wine to the three men guarding the horse, and they soon fall asleep because he put some sleep potion into the wine. To the man holding the horse's rein, he gives a simple rope. To the man holding the horse's tail, he gives a bundle of straw. The man sitting in the horse's saddle is lifted up with the saddle, using a cable construction. Then the thief wraps the horse's hooves in fabric and leads it silently out of the stable.
A night, he lures the count out of his castle and into a trap, so he's out of the way. He disguises as the count, goes to the countess and tells her he shot the thief, but because it was his godson, he wants to bury him appropriately, so he asks for her bedsheet (as a tomb shroud) and her ring (as a blessing). The countess does not recognize him in the darkness and gives him what he wishes.
Finally, the master thief catches a swarm of crayfish and tapes wax-candles onto their backs. He lets them free on the graveyard behind the church, where they run around between the graves with the burning candles. Disguised again, the thief goes into the church, introducing himself as Saint Petrus to the parson and the sexton. He tells them that the end of times is near. When they look out of the window, they see the walking lights on the graveyard – he tells them they are the souls of the dead. If he, Petrus, should bring them to heaven, they should crawl into the bag he brought, which they do, believing him.
The Master Thief brings the bag with the two to his godfather, proving the count that he is indeed a master of his craft (or that the people around him are just that easily fooled). So he can leave unharmed.

Alright, the ring was the least spectacular theft – but it was the only thing I could actually picture. And now the countess pouts... I like that the tale fits Armarza so well – it's totally something she would do.
