I am Sporus

Two different depictions of Sporus, a young freedman in the Roman Empire who became the "wife" of Emperor Nero. Nero was a weird guy, but I don't blame him for all of his weird ideas, and I don't blame him either for having an interest in men, not even men in women's garb.

But I can and do blame him for having a boy of about 14 years castrated, raped, stuck in a gown and veil, presented to the empire as his bride, and pressured into a gender role he didn't choose for himself. Sporus was Nero's wife for about two years, he was presented as empress in public (see first outfit) and even called Sabina, for Nero's deceased wife Poppaea Sabina whom Sporus was said to resemble to a great extent, which, siiiick.

And after Nero's suicide, Sporus was still treated as a girl; Nymphidus Sabinus married him, probably to have a claim on the throne, and after he was killed, Sporus was handed over to Otho, who also married him (perhaps for his own claim, perhaps because Poppaea Sabina once had been his wife as well and he liked the replacement as much as Nero did).

Next to sit on the throne (Roman emperors superseded each other in almost monthly cadence in 68/69) was Vitellius, and he had no interest in marrying Sporus - no, his brilliant new idea was to have the "Rape of Proserpina", an essential part of mythology, re-enacted in a public play, with Sporus as the female lead. Yeah, Sporus was pretty much fed up at this point. He comitted suicide before the public rape could take place, see second outfit which is mostly following my headcanon idea of Sporus' end - I like to imagine he wanted to die as himself after years of this fucked up farce. He was not yet 20.

Hm, do I have to age-lock this picture because it references (if vaguely) a suicide or because Sporus was a crossdresser? Whatevs, I'll have it as mature content just to be safe.
